Navan WI End of Year

We are coming to the end of another successful and fun year with the Navan WI.  We Women are sure Informed and having fun.  Due to our very successful fundraisers over the past year, we are able to “Play it Forward” more than ever.  We would very much like to thank everyone for supporting our initiatives and welcome the assistance of our partners, most notably the Navan Lions and Nifty 50 Plus Clubs.

At our last meeting, we decided to contribute to a number of community and WI projects.  We will once again be giving $500 to the Navan Fair for the Parade, Ambassador Competition and Kids Zones as well as the Homecraft, Culinary Arts, Floriculture and Educational Divisions.  We will also donate $500 to the Hannah Billings Fund, and contribute to the St. Mary’s Church Hall renovations, the Cumberland Resource Centre and WI projects at the Provincial and International level, most notably this year to support a Lyme Disease Research Project at the University of Guelph.  We will also donate to the Women’s Heart Institute at the University of Ottawa and will be awarding 2 bursaries of $300 to deserving local women.

Watch our web site for further details.

We very much believe in our goal of helping to make our community a better place and to that end, we will be sponsoring a “Twelfth Night” production of Shakespeare in the Park on July 4 where all are welcome and you will see us again partnering with the Navan Lions Club to provide a small meal after the Remembrance Day.

So thanks once again everyone!

On Sunday, September 17th more than 100 people enjoyed a warm sunny afternoon at the Domaine Perrault winery in support of the Navan Women’s Institute. Guests sampled Perrault wines and tasty appetizers, and chatted with friends and family in the beautiful setting of the Perrault Winery.
Many thanks to everyone who contributed to making the event such a success again this year: to those who attended, to the WI members who volunteered with all aspects, and to Denis and Lyse Perrault, Julie Ricard and the staff of Perrault Wines. Funds raised will support programs and projects in our local community.

NAVAN WOMEN'S INSTITUTE CORNER

Wednesday, October 11th our members enjoyed a fabulous presentation by Karen and Vic Smithwaite who are visiting from the Isle of Man, situated in the Irish Sea just north of Wales and between England and Ireland.. We are one of many stops as they travel across Canada.  We enjoyed some of the history and geography of the Isle of Man compliments of Vic.  They have their own government, money, postage and did you know Queen Elizabeth is actually known as The Lord of Man there on the island? The first and second oil tankers in the world were built on the Isle of Man. And they are the home of the largest water wheel (which pumped water out of the mine). Steam trains and trams still run too!

Karen took over and educated us about the Branches of Women's Institutes that are on the island (there are 26).  The first branch, Lezayne WI, was formed in 1949. We learned about their Coffee & Chats, Denham College which was donated by Lady Denham as an educational institution that provides education for W.I. members. There are many more events and fun that happens on the Isle of Man.  Be sure to connect with Sue Woram (Karen's cousin) to learn more about our Women's Institute Branches located on the Isle of Man.

Domes of Navan

Picture
The Cumberland Township Historical Society has produced a booklet telling the story of how the "Domes of Navan" found their way from LeBreton Flats to the Navan Fairgrounds back in 1984. Anyone who likes the Navan Fair (and let's face it that's just about everyone) will find this to be a nice read on a bit of local history from the mid 1980s, and a great gift idea for friends and relatives. You can pick up copies of these booklets at Bradley's Store or by calling Verna Cotton at 613-835-2490 or Ross Bradley at 613-835-2199. The price is $20 or 2 for $30.
